There are some stories that sound almost impossible to believe.
They make us wonder: Was it a miracle? Was it a coincidence? Or is there something about the human mind and faith that science has not yet fully understood?
One such story is connected with the famous Indian saint Neem Karoli Baba, also known as Maharaj-ji.
From Richard Alpert to Ram Dass
One of the most remarkable people influenced by Neem Karoli Baba was Richard Alpert, an American psychologist and former Harvard professor.
In the 1960s, Alpert travelled to India while searching for deeper answers about consciousness and spirituality. Eventually, he met Neem Karoli Baba at Kainchi.
What happened after that meeting changed his life.
Richard Alpert became a disciple of the Baba and received the name Ram Dass, meaning “servant of God.” He later became a well-known spiritual teacher and author. His book Be Here Now helped introduce many Western readers to Indian spirituality.
It is difficult to explain exactly what happened inside Richard Alpert’s mind.
A scientist might look for psychological explanations. A devotee might call it the grace of a saint.
Whatever the explanation, one thing is certain: his life took a completely different direction after meeting Neem Karoli Baba.
And then there is another story—one involving a train.
The Mysterious Train Incident
According to a traditional account, Neem Karoli Baba was travelling in the area of present-day Uttar Pradesh.
At one point, he boarded a train without a ticket.
A railway official noticed this and asked him to leave the train.
The Baba did not argue.
He simply got down and sat quietly beneath a nearby neem tree.
The railway officials then tried to continue the journey.
But something strange happened.
The train would not move.
The driver tried again.
Nothing.
Railway staff examined the engine and tried to find the problem. According to the traditional story, however, they could not find any obvious mechanical reason why the train would not proceed.
Meanwhile, Neem Karoli Baba remained sitting quietly under the tree.
Some passengers and local people began to believe that the train had stopped because the saint had been insulted.
Eventually, railway officials approached Baba and asked him to return to the train.
They apologised and requested his forgiveness.
Baba agreed.
According to the story, once he boarded the train, the engine started, and the train was able to continue its journey.
The Railway Station
The story goes even further.
It is said that Baba asked the railway authorities to build a station near the village because local people had to travel a long distance to reach a railway station.
According to accounts preserved by devotees, a station was subsequently established at Neeb Karori, the place associated with the incident.
This is also connected with how the name Neem Karoli Baba became associated with the saint. However, historical accounts of the name and the exact details of the railway incident differ, so the story is best understood as a long-standing traditional account rather than a scientifically verified miracle.
Miracle or Coincidence?
And here comes the biggest question.
Did Neem Karoli Baba really stop the train through supernatural power?
We don’t know.
A believer may see it as a miracle.
A scientist may ask whether there was an unknown mechanical or operational reason for the train stopping.
There is another possibility: perhaps some details of the story changed as it was passed from one generation to another.
Science demands evidence before accepting a supernatural explanation.
Faith does not always work in the same way.
That is what makes stories like this so fascinating.
Neem Karoli Baba became famous not only because of stories about miracles, but also because of his teachings about love, compassion, devotion and service to others. His influence reached far beyond India, and people from many different backgrounds came to him seeking spiritual guidance.
Perhaps we will never know exactly what happened that day near the railway line.
Maybe it was a miracle. Maybe it was coincidence.
Or maybe there are simply some events that leave us with more questions than answers.
