God was alone. There was nothing except him. Thus, he thought, ‘I am alone. Let me create a beautiful multiverse. Therefore, he created planets and the whole universe.
And God created the heavens and the earth.
He said, ‘Let there be light and there was light.’ The sun’s existence created the day and the night on the earth. He then made the sea, the sky, the land, and all the creatures to inhibit the earth.
After creating animals of all kinds, God formed the first human being from the dust of the ground. This man was called Adam. God breathed into Adam’s nostrils the breath of life. Hence, Adam became a living being. In short, god created the man in his own image.
God placed Adam in a beautiful garden on the earth called Eden. This garden was full of various trees bearing fruits for food.
In the centre of the garden, there were two special trees. One was the Tree of Life and the second the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
God gave Adam the freedom to eat from any tree in the garden.
But he did not allow him to eat the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
“You must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it, you will surely die.” He warned Adam.
God also gave Adam the responsibility to look after the garden and all the animals.
However, it came to notice from God that Adam was alone. Thus he said, “It is not good for man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for you.”
So, when Adam fell into a deep sleep, God took one of his ribs and formed it into a woman.
When Adam awoke, he saw a woman with him. Adam named her Eve.
“This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. You shall be called ‘woman,’ Adam said.
Adam and Eve lived together happily in the Garden of Eden. They had everything they needed, and they enjoyed life as friends.
They were naked, but they felt no shame because they were pure and innocent.
One day, however, a serpent entered the garden. This serpent was more cunning than any other creatures God had made. It was Satan, or the devil, in disguise.
The serpent approached Eve and enquired about God’s command.
“Did God say you must not eat from any tree in the garden?” enquired the devil.
‘We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden. But God ordered us not to eat fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden. And if we eat the fruit, we will die,’ Replied Eve.
The serpent tried to deceive her.
“You will not surely die. Because God knows that when you eat from it, it will open your eyes, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” Said the serpent.
The fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil was pleasing and attractive to the eye. Eve thought she must eat it to gain wisdom.
Thus, she took some of the fruit and ate it. She also gave some to Adam, and he ate it as well.
When they ate the fruit, it opened their eye. They realized they were naked. Filled with shame, they covered their bodies with tree leaves to cover themselves.
That evening, they heard the voice of God walking in the garden. Adam and Eve hid among the trees.
God called out to Adam, “Where are you?” Adam responded, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.”
“Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree- that I told you not to eat from?” asked God.
“The woman you put here with me gave me a fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” Said Adam.
Then, God questioned Eve.
“The serpent deceived me and compelled me to eat,” said she.
God then gave a final decision on all three.
God cursed the serpent and said, ‘Because you have done this, you will crawl on your belly in the dirt. And I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your offspring and hers. Man will crush your head.”
Then, God said to Eve.
He said, ‘You would experience increased pain in childbirth. Your desire would be for your husband, who would rule over you.’
At last, God said to Adam, ‘Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree, which was forbidden for you. Thus, you would toil for food from the ground, until you return to dust after death.’
Because of their disobedience, Adam and Eve were driven out of the Garden of Eden.
God placed cherubim and a flaming sword at the entrance to the garden to guard the way to the Tree of Life. The reason was to prevent them from eating fruit from it, and thus preventing their everlasting sinful life.
Hence, Adam and Eve’s mistake brought sin and death into the world. But God did not leave them as such. He gave them clothes, food and all the necessities of life.
The story of Adam and Eve in the Bible describes the creation of the first humans and their role as the ancestors of the human being. It explains humanity’s origins.
