Ghost Stories-Haunted Story of Bisham Abbey and Bhangarh Fort

The Grey Lady of Bisham Abbey: A Story of Love, Loss, and Haunting

Bisham Abbey is a house in the Marlow region of Buckinghamshire, England. People say it’s haunted and there are many stories about it. One of the most famous stories is about the ghost of the Grey Lady, whom people believe to be Dame Elizabeth Hobby.

Elizabeth Hobby was a member of Queen Elizabeth I’s court. She was a well-educated woman, a writer, and a poet. In 1556, she married a knight who later became the ambassador to France. They moved to Paris, but sadly, her husband Thomas died there. Elizabeth then returned to England and lived in Bisham Abbey.

After Thomas’s death, Elizabeth married Lord John Russell, and they had a son named William. William was not interested in studies and struggled with reading and writing. Elizabeth tried her best to help him improve, but he showed no interest. This frustrated Elizabeth, and sometimes she would get angry and punish him.

William was a mischievous child and often skipped school to play. One day, the principal sent a letter to Elizabeth, complaining about William’s incomplete homework. Furious, Elizabeth demanded that William sit down and finish his homework. However, William ran out to play again. Elizabeth brought him back, and, in her anger, locked him in the storeroom with his notebooks.

Elizabeth then received an urgent message from Queen Elizabeth I, requiring her to travel abroad for a few days.

Unfortunately, she forgot to tell the servants to unlock the storeroom after some time. When she returned a few days later, she rushed to open the storeroom, but it was too late. William had died inside, his body lying on the notebooks. Despite the tragedy, he had completed his homework.

Elizabeth was heartbroken and wept uncontrollably. She loved her son dearly and was devastated by her mistake. She died a few days later in the same house, overcome with grief.

People believe that the ghost of Elizabeth still haunts Bisham Abbey, searching for her son.

Bhangarh Fort- The cursed city

People know Bhangarh Fort as the most haunted place not just in India, but in all of Asia. This fort palace is located in the state of Rajasthan. Many stories surround this palace. King Madho Singh built the Palace.

Story of Balu Nath

There’s an interesting story about how the palace was constructed. At the site of the fort, there was an ascetic (a holy man) living there. He was against the construction of the fort city and objected to it. However, the king persuaded him to give permission. The ascetic agreed on one condition: the shadow of the fort should never fall on his hut. If it did, the fort would be destroyed instantly.

Construction began, but the king’s men ignored the ascetic’s condition. Eventually, the shadow of the fort fell on his hut. As a result, the fort became cursed.

There was a war between another king and the inhabitants of the fort. The fort turned into a cursed city, and hundreds of soldiers and residents were killed. People say that the king tried to rebuild the fort, but the structure could not be restored.

Story of Princess Amravati

Princess Amravati of Bhangarh Palace was renowned for her beauty. The king, her father, wished for her to marry a prince from a neighbouring kingdom. However, a tantric sorcerer named Singhia had fallen deeply in love with her and desired to marry her himself. Knowing that he was not of royal blood and would never be accepted, Singhia resorted to dark magic to achieve his goal.

One day, as Princess Amravati and her friends visited the market to buy perfume, Singhia seized the opportunity. He enchanted a bottle of perfume with a magical potion. His evil plan was that when the princess applied the perfume, she would be compelled to run away with him.

However, Princess Amravati discovered the sorcerer’s trick. Instead of using the perfume on herself, she and her friends poured it onto a large stone. The enchanted stone, now bewitched by the spell, rolled towards Singhia and crushed him to death.

With his dying breath, the vengeful sorcerer cursed the city of Bhangarh, proclaiming that it would be destroyed in the future. His curse cast a dark shadow over the fort city, sealing its fate.

In a few years, there was a war between the neighbouring kingdoms. The king was defeated. The king’s family, along with Prince Amravati and thousands of soldiers were killed. And, people say, now it is a haunting palace.
